Scribbr AI Detector: free checks, accuracy limits & FAQ

Scribbr AI Detector is a free AI detector for reviewing possible AI-written or AI-refined text. This guide explains its ChatGPT detector claims, documented limits and how to interpret a result without treating it as proof.

What is Scribbr AI Detector?

Scribbr AI Detector is a free AI checker for an initial review of writing. It distinguishes likely AI-generated, AI-refined and human writing rather than searching for copied passages.

The public page describes four categories: AI-generated, AI-generated and AI-refined, human-written and AI-refined, and human-written. These are predicted categories, not a record of who typed each sentence.

Free vs Premium

Input sizeUp to 1,200 words per submission; repeat checks allowed.Up to 25,000 words in the documented report; larger documents are truncated.
EntryNo sign-up required on the public checker.AI report included with the Premium Plagiarism Checker described in Help; verify current purchase terms.
Model coverageCurrent documentation is inconsistent; confirm the active product’s coverage rather than treating a legacy model list as a guarantee.

The public FAQ still separates older GPT-2/3/3.5 detection from Premium GPT-4 coverage. Help also describes a transition toward shared technology. That leaves the exact current per-tier coverage unclear. Check with Scribbr before paying for a specific capability. No exact paid price is asserted here.

How it works: patterns, not proof

Scribbr’s methods explainer describes text classification using predictable phrasing and variation. Perplexity concerns how predictable a sequence is to a model. Burstiness concerns variation across sentences.

These are a useful introduction, not a complete specification of the current proprietary detector. Predictable writing can be human, and varied writing can be generated. This is not a hidden watermark test or a database lookup for every ChatGPT answer.

Languages & limits

The current product FAQ lists English, Spanish, German and French. Help contains a narrower list elsewhere. Use the current tool’s language selection and ask support if your language is not clearly covered.

For a long assignment, confirm what was actually processed. A result for an excerpt should not be presented as a result for the entire document. Keep the input version with the report so later edits do not confuse the record.

A practical comparison uses the same known-origin texts in each tool, then checks both incorrect flags and missed AI examples. Do not compare headline percentages from different datasets as if they were one experiment.

How to read scores: a guideline, not a verdict

Scribbr’s reliability guidance warns against treating a detector result as standalone evidence. Its own product FAQ says no detector, including Scribbr’s, guarantees 100% accuracy.

  1. Keep the scanned text and date, not only a screenshot of the percentage.
  2. Review flagged passages in context. A score is an estimate, not an authorship certificate.
  3. Check drafts, citations and revision history alongside the report.
  4. Discuss unexpected findings before making a consequential decision.

False positives are a recognized failure mode: human writing can share the patterns a detector associates with AI. A lower score after editing does not prove that a document is now compliant with a course policy.

Scribbr AI Detector FAQ

Is Scribbr AI Detector free?

The public checker allows free checks with up to 1,200 words per submission and no account requirement. The Premium document workflow is separate. Check the current product page before assuming the free tool provides a full paid report.

Can Scribbr detect ChatGPT writing?

Scribbr markets the checker for AI writing, including ChatGPT. Its public FAQ and Help page differ in how they describe model coverage and a technology transition. Verify your current tool rather than assuming it reliably catches every ChatGPT version.

Is Scribbr AI Detector 100% accurate?

No. Scribbr explicitly says its detector cannot guarantee complete accuracy. Both false positives and missed AI content are possible. We have not independently benchmarked the tool.

Does Scribbr use the same AI detector as my university?

Do not assume so. The Help page describes Scribbr as a distinct tool that may return different results. Ask your institution which system and policy it uses. A similar principle does not make two scores interchangeable.

Why did my score change after editing?

Editing changes the text patterns a detector evaluates. A different score is not proof that authorship changed. Preserve drafts and explain your writing process instead of optimizing an assignment solely for a lower percentage.

Is the AI Detector the same as the Plagiarism Checker?

No. AI detection classifies writing patterns; plagiarism checking compares text with existing material. A low AI score does not establish correct citation, and a low similarity score does not establish human authorship.

Which languages does Scribbr AI Detector support?

The current public product page lists English, Spanish, German and French. The Help article has a narrower language list in one section, so check your selected tool and language before submitting.

Can I scan more than 25,000 words with Premium?

The Help page says the documented report scans only the first 25,000 words of a larger document. Its score therefore does not describe the unscanned remainder. Confirm the current limit before purchasing.

Does AI-refined mean I cheated?

No detector category decides a policy violation. Editing assistance may be allowed, restricted or require disclosure depending on the assignment. Review the actual assistance used and your institution’s rules.

Can I use a free AI detector score as proof against someone?

A score should guide a review, not decide an allegation on its own. Examine the original writing, sources, drafts and revision history, and allow the writer to explain the process.
